Primary Division

The Primary Division, generally for students ages 8 and older, provides beginning ballet and dance training for girls and boys who wish to explore and experience the joy of dance.

LEVEL 1 (1A & 1B)
•    Curriculum content: beginner ballet technique
•    Open to continuing Rock School Pre Ballet 2 students approved by the School Directors for advancement to Level 1A
•    Additional openings for girls and boys new to The School generally age 8 and older assigned to Level 1A upon completing an audition placement process
•    Previous formal training acceptable but not required
•    Enrollment is first come first served, with priority extended to re-enrolling Rock School pupils in good standing
•    Advancement to Level 1B after the completion of a year of training in Level 1A

LEVEL 1X
•    Curriculum content: advanced-beginner ballet technique
•    Open to continuing Rock School Level 1A and 1B students approved by the School Directors for advancement to Level 1X; additional openings for girls and boys new to The School generally age 9 and older assigned to Level 1X after an audition placement process
•    1 full year of previous classical ballet training required (pre-ballet instruction not included)
•    3 classes per week required
•    Preparatory pointe, ankle strengthening and placement class
•    Enrollment is first-come, first-served with priority extended to re-enrolling Rock School pupils in good standing

LEVEL 2*
•    Curriculum content: intensified advanced-beginner ballet technique including beginner barre pointe with directors’ appoval
•    Open to continuing Rock School Level 1X students approved by the School Directors for advancement to Level 2; additional openings for girls and boys new to The School generally age 10 and older assigned to Level 2 after an audition placement process
•    2 full years of previous classical ballet training required (pre-ballet instruction not included)
•    4 classes per week required
•    Enrollment is first-come, first-served with priority extended to re-enrolling Rock School pupils in good standing

LEVEL 2X*
•    Curriculum content: intensified advanced-beginner ballet technique including basic pointe work
•    Open to continuing Rock School Level 2 students approved by the School Directors for advancement to Level 2X; additional openings for girls and boys new to The School generally age 10 and older assigned to Level 2X after an audition or placement process
•    2-3 full years of previous classical ballet training required (pre-ballet instruction not included)
•    5 classes per week required
•    Enrollment is first-come first-served with priority extended to re-enrolling Rock School pupils in good standing

*Although a specific number of classes per week is the preferred schedule for each level, parents and students, upon consultation with the School Directors, may opt for a less rigorous schedule (one or two class less per week).  The optional class is noted on the schedule. However, parents and students choosing to follow this less intensive program should be aware that a student’s technical progress and level advancement may take longer.
